Nubya Garcia Unveils New Single “Lean In,” a Nod to the UK’s Garage Scene of the Late 1990s

July 14, 2023 – Today, rising saxophone star and composer Nubya Garcia has shared her newest single, “Lean In.” Listen to it HERE.  On the track, Garcia pays affectionate tribute to the Garage scene that dominated the UK club scene throughout the late 1990s. Garcia’s freewheeling and supple melody lines are buoyed by syncopated rhythms and bright countermelodies provided by her band, consisting of bassist Daniel Casimir, keyboardist Deschanel Gordon, and drummer Sam Jones.

Garcia notes, “Inspired by the sounds of Garage that I grew up around, this track is about the combination of leaning into the frenzy of life and going with the flow, letting the universe keep things moving, and trusting it’s all gonna’ bop along.”

She hopes listeners will give themselves the grace to, in her words, “Lean in and both trust yourself and ask for what you need. Lean in to your community.  Lean in to your spirit. Lean in to the unknown with as much courage as you can. Lean in and let go.”

Garcia will appear at a number of music festivals throughout the UK and Europe this summer and will announce further tour plans in the coming weeks. A list of confirmed dates is below.

About Nubya Garcia:

Nubya Garcia is a multi-award-winning saxophonist and composer and a fixture in London’s burgeoning jazz community. Her debut album Source, described by the New York Times as funneling “a life’s worth of experiences into an hour long listen,” entered the UK charts in the top 30 and was shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

The NME’s Dhruva Balram observed, “Source is a reflection of Nubya Garcia’s hometown; a mirror spotlighting London’s skilled musicians and a reminder of how thrilling this scene can be….While nodding to jazz greats of the past, Garcia has created a sound that, for many years to come, will reverberate as her own.”

In 2022, Garcia toured the US in support of Khruangbin, performing at sold-out venues including New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, and Philadelphia’s The Met.

Her subsequent headline tour saw her play to capacity crowds at venues such as The Salt Shed, Le Poisson Rouge, and The Ford, and at festivals including Glastonbury, Love Supreme, Pickathon, and Newport Jazz.

In March of this year, London Brew – a group featuring Garcia and other leading lights of London’s jazz scene – released their self-titled album, which has met with global acclaim.

Last month, a brand-new live concert recording, Khruangbin and Nubya Garcia Present: Live at Radio City Music Hall, New York, was released by Dead Oceans.
